PCCNC Prostate Screening Referral Guidelines

print friendly version of this page |

Primary care medical professionals treat a multitude of patients. Keeping up with the latest research around all health issues can be particularly challenging. Every year new research is released and researchers learn more and more about how to refine prostate screening. This information may allow you to provide patients with a possibly lifesaving early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Please download PCCNC 2008 Prostate Screening Guidelines (50KB-PDF) to use in your practice! These guidelines are current as of September 2008.

These guidelines are based on National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines for early detection (ref. pages 6-8) and American Urological Association (AUA) Best Practice Policy. They are updated on an as needed basis (after either organization releases new or refined practice guidelines relating to prostate cancer).

These recommendations have been reviewed and supported by Judd Moul M.D., F.A.C.S., and Professor and Chief of the Division of Urology at Duke University Medical Center and Duke Prostate Center physicians and professional staff, Durham, Culley C. Carson, III, M.D., F.A.C.S., Rhodes Distinguished Professor, Professor and Chief of Urology at UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, Chris M. Teigland, M.D., MD, Chairman, McKay Department of Urology, Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, Andrew Griffin, M.D., Carolina Urological Associates, Winston-Salem,, and Hector H. Henry II, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., Clinical Professor, Urology, WFUBMC, Chief, Urology Service, Salisbury VAMC, and Medical Director, Cabarrus Health Alliance Prostate Outreach Program for Screening, Concord.

If you are concerned about referral, please share this discussion guide with your patients: Primary Care Doctor/ Patient Pre- Urologic Referral Discussion Guide for Patients with Abnormal Screening Result.
