Hugh Carr Memorial Fun Run
|
An MGA member and prostate cancer survivor inspired the formation of the Charity Golf Classic Tournament at the Devils Ridge Golf Club to benefit the fight against Prostate Cancer. Funds raised during the event have been used to develop statewide prostate cancer awareness campaigns including the Partners Program (breast and prostate cancer dual awareness campaign) and the PCCNC Annual Screening Guidelines. | ![]() |

African-American men are more likely to develop prostate cancer and almost 3 times more likely to die of the disease. The Minority Action Team's annual awareness conference promotes the reduction and elimination of the prostate cancer health disparity. Each year leaders in this initiative gather to share lessons learned and strategies to promote awareness, outreach and patient education.

A pillar of the Sanford community, for years Hugh Carr worked tirelessly to promote prostate cancer patient education and advocacy throughout North Carolina. The memorial fun run serves to promote the continuation of the work Hugh started with Bob Cline, Dan Kassick and others to build Sanford as a local prototype for community engagement around promoting awareness and early detection of prostate cancer and a hub of prostate cancer patient information for Lee County and the state of North Carolina.
