On a grassroots level, it is critical for PCCNC members to encourage local legislators to be aware and vote in favor of legislation that supports North Carolina families and communities in regard to awareness of prostate cancer, access to early detection (prostate screening) and "best practices" medical care for prostate cancer patients.

Tips and Resources

• Involve policy-makers in your activities. Invite them to local prostate cancer related events.
• Learn the art of the fifteen-minute meeting & the one-pager. Communication is critical to advocacy. Aim to be informative and persuasive, but do so succinctly. Use the PCCNC logo on your correspondance materials to show our statewide soliderity pertaining to prostate cancer related issues.
• Be as specific about issues as possible -- cite relevant bill numbers and titles, subcommittee titles, and how your legislator can help.
• Do your homework -- Know the policy-maker's background, values, priorities, and responsibilities.
• Be knowledgeable about specific matters and current policy developments which relate to you.
• Build long-term relationships -- View your contacts -- members or staff -- in terms of establishing long-term, professional, mutually beneficial relationships.
