Prostate cancer has a disproportional impact on African American Communities

  • 1 in 4 Black men get Prostate Cancer.
  • African-American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world.
  • African-American men in NC have one of the highest death rates from prostate cancer in the nation.
  • Nationally, black men have about a 60% higher incidence rate of prostate cancer than white men and die at a rate 240% higher than white men.

According to Judd W. Moul, MD, FACS and Professor and Chief of the Division of Urology at Duke University Medical Center, prostate cancer is a particular concern for African-American men because there is a higher risk of developing prostate cancer at an earlier age than white men. It was thought that African-American men were prone to develop a more biologically aggressive cancer than white men. "Our data do not support that theory," he says. "With earlier detection, African-American men and white men have basically the same outcome."
