Support for African-American families faced with a prostate cancer diagnosis

PC Shepherds
…is a support organization for men who are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. The group provides encouragement, resources for understanding diagnosis, awareness of treatment options, and hope.

The days following a diagnosis of prostate cancer can be stressful and traumatic. The process of making decisions regarding treatment options further contributes the feeling of bewilderment. The PC Shepherds program was created to “shepherd” men who have been diagnosed with the disease. The program provides needed social support to newly diagnosed men and the sharing of personal stories of victory and strength.

PC Angels
…is a group of women who help other women increase their awareness of prostate cancer and encourage the men in their lives to get screened annually. Angels provide support for wives, family members and other caregivers of men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The role that women play is often overlooked when discussing prostate cancer. Wives can often feel helpless, left out of the decision making process and overlooked as a valuable source of support during the diagnosis and treatment stages. Mothers, wives, sisters and friends can be powerful influences for promoting good health.

Umoja
…means unity and is the PC Shepherds support group model. Umoja provides a culturally sensitive model for providing support for African-American men with prostate cancer.

Umoja meets the 4th Friday of every month from 12:00 - 1:00 at the Martin Street Baptist Church. Contact Randolph Bazemore, group facilitator and PC Shepherd for additional details at (919)467-4440. Click here for map and directions.
