North Carolina is home to some of the most progressive cancer research centers in the country. Following are brief overviews of some of the well known cancer centers located in North Carolina, listed alphabetically. Clicking on center names will open a new browser window that contains the center's website.

Cancer Centers of North Carolina
CCNC is a comprehensive outpatient cancer treatment center in the Raleigh area. For prostate cancer patients, CCNC offers national clinical trials, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy. Other services include medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, hematology, clinical laboratory services, an onsite pharmacy and patient support services, including a monthly support group.

Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center
Treatments available at this facility include: Radiation Therapy, Medical Oncology and Surgical Treatment, including the area's only surgical oncologist.

Carolinas Healthcare System
Carolinas Healthcare System offers Blood tests (Alkaline phosphatase, blood urea nitrogen, liver function), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan / CT scan, Prostascint scan / Radionuclide bone scan, Radiation therapy (external beam and brachytherapy), Hormone therapy / Chemotherapy / Immunotherapy.

Studies are available from the National Cancer Institute-sponsored cooperative groups and from the pharmaceutical industry.

Catawba Valley Medical Center
Catawba Valley Medical Center is one of the first centers in the state to offer brachytherapy ? prostate seed implants for men with prostate cancer. They also offer Radiation Oncology, Nutrition Care, and Spiritual Care

Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center
The program?s mission is to deliver outstanding clinical care to men with prostate cancer and to participate in basic and clinical investigations that will improve prospects for early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this cancer.

Duke is currently researching Tumor Vaccines, Researchers at Duke are investigating a diet that, in initial studies, appears to slow tumor growth. In a large study, a team of Duke researchers is investigating the reasons behind mortality differences between black men and white men with prostate cancer. In addition to other services, Duke offers Pet Scan.

Forsyth Regional Cancer Center
The center has facilities for Radiation: Brachytherapy, Linear Accelerators, & 3D Treatment Planning, and also offers Surgery & Biological Therapy. Forsyth participates in many research trials of preventive and clinical medications and methods to qualified healthy people.

Frye Regional Medical Center
Frye offers Brachytherapy, Chemotherapy, Computerized tomography, Surgery, and Tumor Registry. The center also offers the Frye Auxiliary Cancer Resource Center and "Yoga for the Cancer Survivor."

Iredell Memorial Hospital

Services offered include external beam therapy using two Varian Medical linear accelerators; one equipped with 120 multileaf, collimination, dual proton energy, and electrons, permanent prostate seed implantation, and 3D conformal therapy.

Leo Jenkins Cancer Center
Radiation oncology at East Carolina University's (ECU) Brody School of Medicine has some useful resources for prostate cancer patients. This facility offers the Siemens Primatom for image guided IMRT for prostate cancer patients. This facility also offers Prostate Seed Implants and other resources for patients considering radiation therapy.

Mission St. Josephs

Mission St. Joseph's Cancer Services offers knowledgeable and comprehensive cancer care. We have successfully treated many forms of the disease and are able to meet the needs of a wide variety of patients. With this experience and understanding, patients can feel confident that the cancer care they need is right here in Asheville.

Services offered include Stereotactic Radiotherapy, Prostate Seed Implantation, External Beam Radiation Therapy, Brachytherapy, and 3-D Conformal Therapy.

Morehead Memorial Smith-McMichael Cancer Center
This center can provide Cancer diagnosis and staging, Chemotherapy, Pain management, Radiation oncology: to shrink or eliminate malignant tumors, and Surgical Treatment.

Mountain Regional Cancer Centers, Division of the WestCare Health System

Serving approximately 350 new patients a year, Mountain Regional Cancer Centers make it possible for residents requiring radiation therapy to receive quality cancer care close to home. Their services offered include: Low dose rate, brachytherapy services, prostate seed implantation, electron energies for superficial treatment, fluoroscopic and CT simulation, CT interfaced three-dimensional treatment planning, and treatment of deep tumors.

The center is staffed by board Certified Radiation Oncologist, Board Certified Medical Dosimetrists, Registered Nurses with specialized oncology training, Board Registered Radiation Therapists, X-Ray Technologist, and a Consulting Board Certified Medical Physicist.

Nash Cancer Treatment Center
Offering Free scheduled screenings, pain management - including therapeutic massage, educational resources - including nutrition information, and counseling prevention information.

Presbyterian Cancer Center
The center can be located at 200 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, North Carolina 28204. The phone number for the Presbytarian Cancer Center is 704-384-4000.

Diagnostic services include Transrectal Ultrasonography, Intravenous Pyelogram, Cystoscopy, and Biopsy. Treatment services include Chemotherapy, Hormonal Therapy, Biological Therapy, Radiation Treatment on the Linear Accelerator, and Brachytherapy.

Rex Cancer Center
Rex offers inpatient oncology, outpatient chemotherapy treatment, blood transfusion, and Pet Scan. Rex Cancer Center's state-of-the-art radiation therapy area provides the most advanced equipment and procedures available in cancer treatment. Radiation Oncologists develop individual radiation treatment plans for each patient beginning with simulation, a process involving special X-rays used to precisely locate and mark areas to be treated. External radiation, hyperthermia (heat) treatments, three dimensional therapy and internal seed implant radiation are several treatment options available. Rex also offers a number of support services and programs for patients and their families.

UNC-CH Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
UNC has facilities for Medical Oncology, Radiation Therapy, and Surgery, Laparoscopic surgical procedures for some prostate cancers performed through tiny muscle-sparing incisions via video-assisted surgery, Nerve-sparing surgery to preserve potency is available to men with prostate cancer, Prostatectomy, Orchiectomy with lymph node dissection for testicular cancer, and Interventional radiologists with significant experience in percutaneous and intraoperative ablation techniques cooperate with your urologist.

Research is currently being conducted at this facility for Intermittent Androgen Deprivation, The Role of Salvage Prostatectomy for Radiation Failure in Prostate Carcinoma, Estramustine Docetaxel and Bevacizumab in Men w/ Hormone Refractory Prostate Cancer, and Chemoprevention Trials of Selenium and Prostate Cancer.

Wake Forest Comprehensive Cancer Center
National Cancer Institute: Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence
Services include endorectal MRI imaging, transrectal biopsy, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, and radioactive seed implants. Research currently conducted at this center include chemoprevention: soy supplementation & vitamin D, molecular epidemiology, and novel therapies

Wake Radiology Oncology Services
Wake Radiology Oncology Services is the Triangle's first freestanding, full-service, outpatient radiation therapy center. Its state-of-the-art facility combines the newest technology in three-dimensional radiation therapy with the expertise of highly trained professionals to provide thorough, quality care for each patient. The practice was the first to offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) to treat prostate cancer in Wake County.
