Awareness

Early Detection

Be empowered to self advocate. First, understand the entire early detection process. Prostate screening is the first important step, and doing so as part of a complete physical is best, so talk to your doctor about prostate screening. North Carolina insurance statutes do cover screening.

Download a summary of nationally recognized clinical "gold standard" screening guidelines - reviewed and supported by physicians at our state's 3 National Cancer Institute (NCI) accredited academic research centers - to share with your doctor.

From detection to diagnosis, only a biopsy can diagnose cancer. If your screening results call for seeing a specialist, be sure to review this referral discussion guide.

"Best Practices" Program Priorities

PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT AND SURVIVORSHIP
  • Disease aggressiveness can vary broadly, so access to tools to navigate the complicated landscape of planning prostate cancer care is essential to short and long-term quality and quantity of life for every man diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • Encouraging the development of mechanisms to support statewide access to multidisciplinary treatment consultation, specifically collaboration and communication between urologists, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists supports the possibility of individualized optimal care for every man diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • Facilitating the availability of information that supports a generally beneficial lifestyle that might aid in recurrence prevention and support long-term management via our survivorship support committee portal.

Prostate cancer is a major health issue in North Carolina. The death rate from prostate cancer in North Carolina is one of the highest in the nation; African-American men in North Carolina have one of the highest death rates from prostate cancer in the world.
